I made this beautiful bowl when I was taking pottery classes at Bellevue College. The instructor gave a lesson on hand building bowls using this technique of putting pieces of clay (coils, balls, etc.) over a hump mold and smoothing the outer side using a flexible rib tool to hold all the pieces together. After the clay dries slowly to leather hard, we removed the bowl form the hump mold to see the mosaic created on the inside.
I've tried recreating bowls using this technique at a different studio. However, the clay pieces seem to be shrinking more such that gaps form between them and the bowl doesn't hold together.
